*Match Report: Risborough RFC vs Reading 2s*
KO: 3pm | League: 9th vs 8th
Risborough welcomed Reading 2s to Top School in what always promised to be a tight contest between two closely matched sides in the table — and it certainly delivered drama right to the final whistle.
The visitors struck first, crossing early for a 0–5 lead, but Risborough responded well. Fly-half Guy kept the scoreboard ticking with a series of well-taken penalties, nudging Risborough ahead 9–5 after sustained pressure, including strong defensive sets and turnovers that allowed the hosts to play their way out of danger and into attacking territory.
Despite Risborough’s momentum, Reading hit back just before the break with a converted try to edge ahead 12–9 at half-time.
The second half saw Risborough come out firing. A disallowed try early on didn’t dampen spirits, and after some powerful carries — notably from Andy — the breakthrough came. “Big Andy” crashed over for a deserved try, converted by Guy to give Risborough a 16–12 lead.
The hosts continued to build, with Morts finishing off a strong passage of play to extend the lead to 23–12 following another successful conversion. At this stage, Risborough looked in control.
However, the game took a dramatic turn. A yellow card, followed shortly by further disruption that saw Risborough reduced to 13 men, shifted momentum firmly back to Reading. A penalty try brought the visitors back into it at 23–19, setting up a tense final period.
To their credit, Risborough dug deep, producing a huge defensive stand and a crucial turnover under pressure. But with the numerical advantage telling, Reading eventually found a way through, scoring and converting late on to snatch a 26–23 lead.
A late disallowed try for Risborough summed up a frustrating end to what had been a hugely spirited performance.
Full Time: Risborough 23 – 26 Reading 2s
A tough one to take for Risborough, who showed real grit, attacking intent, and defensive resilience — particularly when down to 13 men. Plenty of positives to build on, but ultimately a game decided by fine margins.
